The Stonecutter's Apprentice

This is my very last piece for my CBI III class. The premise is based on the fact that Michelangelo was apprenticed to a stone cutter at the age of 7 for 3 years. Not sure if he had a dog :D

Homework!

Part one of a 2 part assignment for Children's Book Illustration III. Create a storyline/character that revolves around a holiday theme. My concept is a small town called Holiday Haven, where all the families of various holiday icons (elves, vampires, Easter Bunnies, Cupids, etc) live in the "off season". Of course the kids all go to the same school. This is the 2 page spread, second part of the assignment is 2 separate pages depicting some of the same characters.
This is 11 X 21", goauche, cut paper and micron pen on 140lb hot press Arches paper.

Illustration Friday: Frozen

"All winter, the children skated on the frozen pond."
It has been a while since I did an "Illustration Friday" submission.
This is an oldie from my first year CBI course but it fit the topic!

"Whoooo are you.....?"

My own version of Alice and the Caterpillar. The background is a watercolor wash. The figures are cut from various printed papers with ink details. Check out that psychedelic mushroom!

Umbrella Girl

Here is my first homework assignment for my CBI III class. The text is from the book "Umbrella" by Taro Yashima. We had excerpts from several different books to choose from, but this was one of the few for which I didn't have a preconceived picture in my head. (see my "wild thing" post below)
The figures of the girl and duck, and the sections of the umbrella are gouache on 140lb hot press watercolor paper. The background is collaged old sheet music with a diluted gouache wash over it. The girls dress and boots are printed papers.
I had a blast making the figure as if it were a paper doll which I then "dressed" in the cut-out clothes! This is meant to be a 2 page spread with each page being 8" X 10".

I'll Eat You Up!!!!

My Children's Book Illustration class is in week 2 and we were given the choice of several excerpts from famous books to "re-illustrate", in our own style. I initially planned on doing a scene from Where The Wild Things Are" but have since changed my mind. That didn't stop me from getting Max finished! He is about 12" high, face is gouache, everything else is cut-paper with gouache details. Maybe I will eventually finish this.

Gardening At Midnight.

I love drawing variations of this little Goth Girl! Here she is tending to her lonely little thorn bush (a black rose bush perhaps?) accompanied by her black kitten. This is done in prismacolor pencils and markers. It's about 8 X 10".

An Altered World is a Good World!

My grandchildren insist on "fast-food" when they visit, and who am I to deny them? But do I REALLY have to put up with the ugly little yellow and red whats-its they get for prizes? I think not :D
Voila! 2 cute little Goth Girls made from re-painted ...what-ever those things are.
